__>(picture of me in 96')
A little more than three years ago I had reached the ripe age of seventy-four, and was chagrined to discover that even though I had been jogging almost every day for the preceding twenty years, not only could I no longer jog-but even walking had become disconcertingly painful. The reason: I had put on a lot of weight, and had lost significant amounts of muscle mass. My body mass index showed me to be in the ranks of the dangerously obese.

I had to do something or face the prospect of deteriorating into a fragile, inactive old age. After trying a number of self-administered approaches to exercise in a variety of environments withhout any improvement--to my delight, I found the answer to my concerns on a very pleasant October day in 1997.

That was the day I enrolled at the Lincoln Park Barbell.
(Lincoln Park Fitness Center - LPFC)

I have been working out there five or six days a week ever since. The place provides a wide ranging mix of every kind of equipment for good, solid resistance weight training, and an excellent spectrum of aerobic machines…treadmills, exercise bikes, stair step machines, and elliptic trainers…at a price that is astonishingly modest. In addition the ambiance of the Barbell is a combination of welcoming friendliness, along with a genial acceptance of a diverse membership.

The Barbell (LPFC) has enabled me to go from a condition of life threatening unfitness to a state of good health--is it any wonder that I'm glad that the Barbell is what it is.

It's a neighborhood place. The members are a mixture of young students, professional men and women, some body builders, and even gray heads like myself. And the modest membership dues combined with the pleasant environment make for an A+ grade
in my book.
